Nuclear STEM @UW

Students in levels from undergraduate sophomore to graduate and PhD work together to conduct and publish nuclear science research. This year, two projects are slated for publication and presentation at the INMM 58th Annual Meeting:

Compact Waste-Burning Fission-Fusion Hybrid

Students are performing simulations with the nuclear physics software MCNP to determine key parameters and expected performance of a fission-fusion hybrid based around a compact magnetic fusion core. This hybrid could be used to burn nuclear waste from traditional fission plants, and represents an important step forward in nuclear waste disposal and fusion science.

Thorium Molten Salt Reactor

Students are working with a team from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Indonesia to perform criticality calculations for the core of a compact molten-salt reactor using fertile Thorium fuel using the nuclear physics software MCNP. Thorium reactors are proliferation proof as they do not need enriched material and they can be built securely and in small sized to suit the needs of the Indonesian power grid. These reactors could eventually be built throughout the country, providing power to hundred of thousands of residents.
